Welcome back to our application spotlight series, where we highlight how UltiMaker 3D printing technology powers innovation across industries: from manufacturing and education to high-performance motorsports. Each story shows how additive manufacturing helps teams cut costs, save time, and stay ahead of the competition.
This week, we’re heading to the racetrack in Amersfoort, where a Formula 3 racing team used 3D printing to produce a lightweight, high-performance side pod blower.
In motorsport, every component has a role to play in maximizing performance. The side pod blower helps regulate airflow to cool critical systems in the car. Traditionally, manufacturing such a part requires custom tooling and specialist machining—an expensive and time-consuming process that isn’t always compatible with the fast pace of racing.
By turning to UltiMaker 3D printing, the racing team created a functional side pod blower in-house, combining PET CF for strength and rigidity with TPU 95A for flexible elements. This material pairing delivered the durability needed for racing conditions while reducing both cost and lead time dramatically.
And when iterations were needed? The team could print updated versions directly in the workshop, without waiting weeks for suppliers.
The 3D printed blower was optimized for both airflow and fit, ensuring maximum cooling efficiency without adding unnecessary weight. The flexibility of TPU allowed for smoother integration, while PET CF provided the structural stability needed under high stress.
In motorsports, agility is everything. With 3D printing, teams can design, test, and deploy parts at race pace - turning what used to be a three-week wait into just over a day.
For this Formula 3 team, the side pod blower proved how additive manufacturing can deliver high-performance solutions, helping them stay cool - and stay competitive.
